Travelers Care Founder & CEO Shelly-Ann Cawley, chats with Pearson Bowen on Mornin Barbados, television show.
As our needs change with age or special requirements, travelling can be daunting. With the support of a travelling caregiver, you can have a reliable companion by your side. Shelly-Ann Cawley, founder and CEO of Travelers Care, ensures clients are matched with experienced carers who meet their individual needs.
The story of Travelers Care began in 2001, as Cawley, a former flight attendant and in-flight and safety manager, found herself handling many situations involving vulnerable travellers, such as: unaccompanied minors, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, persons with a fear of flying, and more. With first-hand knowledge and experience of the airline industry, in 2019, she incorporated Travelers Care to assist people who may need a little extra assistance when they fly.
“At Travelers Care, we provide travel assistance for vulnerable travellers and persons who prefer to not fly alone. With over 20 years airline and aviation experience, Travelers Care provides a professional travel companion to fly with and care for you or your loved ones when you use air travel. The aim is to alleviate the potential nightmares and mitigate the risk associated with the rigours of travel, from drop off to pick up, creating inclusion for all,” Cawley told GoodHeart.

Sandy Ehlers has always loved to travel. During her long marriage she and her husband owned department stores and often traveled for work and leisure, by ship, trains and planes. As a buyer for the stores, she thought nothing of heading from her home in the Midwest to New York City for a week or two, or jetting off to Paris. But as she aged, taking trips became more taxing. Ehlers, now 83 and a widow, has an inherited lung condition that means she runs out of breath easily.
"I need to sit down and rest a lot," she said. "To get on and off planes, grab cars and all that takes a little more energy than I have." She uses a wheelchair to get through the airport.
Shelly-Ann Cawley spent years as a flight attendant before she founded her company, Travelers Care, in 2019 because she was concerned about what she observed in airports. Airline and airport staff and members of the public often treated older travelers "just how they wanted to," she said, rather than with dignity and respect.

Thousands of travelers have had their flights canceled, delayed and their luggage lost partly because of staff shortages amid this summer's travel chaos. In some instances, children are suffering the consequences as a result of the pandemonium.
American Airlines lost a 12-year-old child traveling alone at Miami airport last month and shut down the terminal to find her. In the same month, the airline canceled a 10-year-old's flight but failed to inform her parents.
A former flight attendant, who has more than 20 years of experience in the industry, told Insider it is "very common" for unaccompanied children to go missing or be left uncared for.
"Airlines try to minimize and cover it up but it happens pretty frequently and I've seen it across all airlines," Shelly-Ann Cawley says.
Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly-Ann Cawley.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was Ten (10) years old when I boarded an Air Canada Boeing 747 aircraft from The Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) In Kingston, Jamaica to Toronto Pierson International Airport (YYZ) in Toronto, Canada. I was introduced to what has become my passion and livelihood. Escorted up the spiral steps into the flight deck, where there was no flight deck door, the bells and whistles, lights and hospitality ignited my soul.
In 2001, I was privileged to worked for my country’s national carrier (Air Jamaica). Working at Air Jamaica meant you were a part of greatness; my aviation career was born. After migrating to the United States, I flew as a flight attendant with several air carriers, climbing the ladder into leadership roles.
Do not allow your loved-one to be lost in a strange country during air travel.
To prevent such traumatic experience, Shelly-Ann Cawley, who has worked in the airline industry for 21 years, has established the ideal company – Travelers Care.
Its caregivers travel with vulnerable people – including children, senior citizens, patients who have doctor appointments, and the differently abled – until they are in their loved-ones’ care in their right destinations.
“It is a business, but it is also about caring for people,” Cawley noted, adding that her company also delivers puppies to different destinations.
[FORT LAUDERDALE] – As Christmas approaches, Shelly-Ann Cawley is preparing her troops at Travelers Care for the busiest period of the year for the airline industry.
It is a time when families gather for seasonal parties celebrating Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Many travelers are senior citizens who require professional accompaniment.
Even in conventional times, travelling by air with senior citizens can be challenging. Since the coronavirus emerged in early 2020, that task has become more taxing for relatives.
Enter Travelers Care, a Los Angeles-based company that offers accompaniment for seniors from North America to the Caribbean and Latin America.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A local family suffered a big loss, their dog passed away last November.
But, a California business owner is helping them get a fresh start. They recently met at Harrisburg International Airport.
“We have been waiting so long for this dream to come true for us,” Keishla Rodriguez said.
They say a dog is man’s best friend. That reigns especially true for the Rodriguez family, who lost their service dog in late 2020.
For much of 2020, Shelly-Ann Cawley has lived out of the proverbial suitcase. She is CEO of Los Angeles-based Travelers Care which transports at-risk flight passengers across North America and her native Jamaica.
Based on favourable response in Jamaica, Cawley is looking to expand her venture to the Eastern Caribbean and Guyana. Like Jamaica, the region is a hub for seniors and minors traveling to and from North America. Many of them need supervision which is where Travelers Care comes in.

THE complications of COVID-19 have changed the course of travel between Jamaica and key destinations like the United States. Some Jamaicans who live overseas have been stranded due to flight restrictions, mainly in the US and Canada.
Jamaican Shelly-Ann Cawley is head of Travelers Care, a Los Angeles-based company that accompanies seniors and minors on flights to and from the US and Canada.
On July 3, Shelly-Ann Cawley packed her bags and travel documents in order to accompany her 11 year-old relative Amyah Cawley from Ontario, California to Dallas, Texas.
It was the first assignment for Travelers Care --- the company she started in January, 2019 --- since relaunching in early June.
Like many fledgling businesses, Travelers Care has been hit even harder due to COVID-19. Because it specializes in assisting seniors, minors and the health-challenged by plane, the airline industry is its lifeblood.
LOS ANGELES – Heading into 2020, Shelly Ann Cawley had more reason to ring in the new year. Her company, Travelers Care, celebrated its first anniversary and the Jamaican entrepreneur was looking to expand her fledgling enterprise.
Despite multiple safety measures by airlines to appease passengers, traveling by plane is still stressful for many people. Last year, a Jamaican in Los Angeles launched a company to provide personal assistance to the reluctant flyer.
LOS ANGELES, USA – What started as a humanitarian gesture has evolved into a promising business venture for Shelly-Ann Cawley, a Jamaican who lives in Los Angeles. A 20-year veteran of the airline and leisure industries, she operates Travelers Care which provides comprehensive assistance to the flight-challenged.
Every day, we have to jump over numerous hurdles as well as overcome various challenges. In addition, if you are a black woman living in a ‘white’ country, you know that history hasn’t been on your side. However, for every story of opposition and struggles, there are many instances of determination, sticktoitiveness and courage. We have seen many strong black women who have fought against all odds and took it upon themselves to recreate the image. An example of such a woman is Shelly-Ann Cawley. We won’t be surprised if you’ve already heard the story of this purpose-driven lady.
